See Why Kelly's Thoughts on Things Recommends TENZING

There is an abundance of men's skincare products on the market that contain harsh ingredients and fragrances, and as a result many men abandon their skincare routine if their skin reacts badly to certain products.

In fact, TENZING was created because of our shared passion to develop high-quality men's skincare products made with honest and natural ingredients.

We were so humbled when Wendy Pence from Kelly's Thoughts on Things wrote that her husband, who had been unable to use most skincare and fragrance products due to his sensitive skin, had such a wonderful experience using TENZING that she recommended our products as a great holiday gift for the man in your life.

You can ready Wendy's full review of our Adventure Pack, which includes a pre-shave oil, premium shave cream and face moisturizer, here.

Foolproof Tips for Men’s Hair Care

From the “man bun” and high-low fades to the classic comb over, guys now have about as many hairstyle options as women do.

We’re more into our mane than we used to be. Yet, many of us still don’t know the best way to maintain it or when to visit the barber (or admit it — the salon), to keep our hair from looking like it has a serious case of bedhead.

That windblown-too-busy-to-care look may work for J. Crew models, but for any guy who takes himself seriously, perfectly coiffed hair is a part of the entire package.

Instead of forcing your strands into submission, follow these simple tips to keep your hair in the best condition:

Time Your Haircuts

If you have a fade with a bit of hair left on the top to style, wait no more than 2-4 weeks between haircuts. You want to keep the sides nice and clean at all times. Shoulder length hair requires fewer visits to the salon or barber. Go in every 6-10 weeks to keep the ends clean and to take some weight out of your hair.

Scissor cut all over? 4-6 weeks in between cuts is standard. It’s just enough time for you to enjoy some growth, but not let it get too out of control.

Good Products = Good Hair

Your hair only is as good as the products in your bathroom cabinet. The hairstyle you choose to wear on any given day will determine the kinds of products you should use.

If you want a dry textured look, get a matte clay, which adds body and structure to your hair and soothes your scalp. Take a finger scoop and rub it in your hands first. Next, apply it all over your hair, then mold and fix until you have the desired look.

For a shiny look, use a liquid pomade after you towel dry your hair, then style it and let it air dry. This will give your hair shine and movement.

Don’t Even Think About Skipping Shampoo and Conditioner

Regardless of your hair length, always use shampoo and conditioner. If you wash your hair every day, one rinse and one condition is good enough. But if you go a few days in between for that textured, grunge look, you need to shampoo thoroughly two to three times to make sure the shampoo lathers and that you cleanse your scalp. Follow up with the conditioner and only condition one time.

And don’t forget to use the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. For thick hair, look for products with moisture since it’s often harder for thick or curly hair strands to hold onto hydration. For fine hair, look for products with a thickening agent so you can get volume and lift for your style.

You don’t need to become a product junkie and live in the barber’s chair to have enviable hair. Just take care of it — like you would anything else — and you’re all good.

How to Prevent and Treat Post-Shave Irritation

Razor burn is the bane of any guy’s post-shave existence.

Redness, bumps, nicks and cuts can happen even when you think you’ve gotten a perfect shave, but the key to avoiding all this is to improve your shave regimen. That starts with using the right products — and taking steps to prevent those pesky razor bumps in the first place.

Dull Razors and Other Bad Habits

A dull razor and dry shaving are a recipe for razor bumps, redness and cuts. Not exfoliating before and after you shave also leads to bumpy skin. Exfoliating before you shave gets rid of dead skin cells and positions the hairs in the same direction, leading to a smoother shave. And forget about dry shaving — it’s no good. Your skin should be hydrated before you shave. Shave after you shower, wash your face with hot water or at least apply a warm towel for a few minutes to moisten and soften the hairs on your face first.

Step Up Your Shave Game

We get it. It’s so much easier to buy the stuff on sale or the brands that everyone sees in commercials. But too often these products aren’t the best thing for your face.

Most of them contain parabens, dyes and other unnatural ingredients that add to your post-shave grief. Every time you shave, you remove the protective barrier that guards your skin from irritation. Shaving also dehydrates the skin, which means you have to use the right products to restore moisture. A good product will contain aloe, which has antioxidants that increase blood circulation and help to soften and remove dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling smoother and more refreshed.

A good pre-shave oil is essential. Look for one that contains all-natural ingredients like castor and grape seed oils, which stimulates skin repair. Razor bumps often pop up because your skin isn’t lubricated enough, so the first step to perfecting your shave regimen is to make sure your razor has glide. Apply pre-shave oil before your shaving cream and you’ll be on the road to a smoother shave.

Don’t shave without a premium shave cream. It should strengthen and hydrate your skin and contain ingredients (like aloe and shea butter) that minimize ingrown hairs, which lead to razor bumps. Apply it evenly all over your face to get the good glide we mentioned before.

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture

In the battle against razor bumps, there are three things you need: oil, cream — and last but not least — moisturizer. Moisturizer tones and rejuvenates the skin, adding much-needed hydration after your skin has been stripped of moisture during the shaving process. If you do everything else right but skip this critical step, you can say goodbye to a smooth shave and hello to bumpy skin.

We all sometimes get lazy with our grooming, but the results always show up on our face. Every guy should put his best face forward every day, and you can’t do that with a jawline full of razor bumps. So if you’ve been slacking, it’s time to step up your shave game. A little bit of effort will help you avoid plenty of irritation.

How to Use a Shaving Brush

 TENZING_Shave_brush

Admit it—you like to occasionally pamper yourself, too.

Last year, men spent more than $4 billion on personal grooming products, and most of this money went to skincare.

There’s nothing wrong with a little “mampering.” Every guy should embrace his inner George Clooney, and that starts with getting the perfect shave. There’s one often-overlooked way to accomplish this: a great shaving brush.

Yes, we know you’ve been shaving since you hit puberty, but too many men still haven’t gotten the hang of using a shaving brush — if they’ve used one at all.

Regardless of the size, shape, hair grade or hair type, a good shaving brush is essential. Every guy should be schooled in the art of using one. Here’s your step-by-step guide (you can thank us later):

Step # 1: First, apply pre-shave oil to soften your beard before you begin shaving. This lets the razor glide easily and cut the hairs without irritating your skin.

Step # 2 Next, soak your shaving brush with warm water and shake off any excess moisture. Put your shaving cream into a shave bowl and lather the cream by whipping the brush and cream in the bowl. (Tip: Use a premium product with all-natural ingredients with your shaving brush to get an even smoother shave).

Step # 3: Lather up! Using the brush, rub the shave cream onto your face in a circular motion. The more pressure and speed you apply, the richer the lather, which leads to to a smoother shave.

Step # 4: Start shaving. Take your time and always shave with the grain of your hair first. If necessary, shave against the grain to remove any stubble you’ve left behind. When you’re done, rinse your face with cold water and apply moisturizer.

Step # 5: Take care of your shaving brush. Rinse it with warm water after each use and dry it off before using it again.

Shaving brushes are a grooming must. The bristles of your brush soften the skin underneath your facial hair, giving you a clean, smooth shave. They also exfoliate your skin, get rid of ingrown hairs and reduce the chances you’ll cut yourself when shaving. Bottom line: You need one. Don’t shave without it.

Why All Guys Should Invest in a Good Moisturizer

TENZING_Skincare_for_Men_Face_Moisturizer

Guys, you actually need moisturizer.

And we’re not talking about the flowery, scented stuff your wife or girlfriend uses. Or the cheap, store-brand stuff you bought because you caught a good BOGO deal. If you put a shoddy product on your face, imagine what you can expect long term.

Taking care of your skin is non-negotiable, and that goes for even the manliest among us. A good-quality moisturizer should be as much a part of your grooming regimen as shave cream, cologne and deodorant. If you still aren’t convinced, here are three reasons you should stock up.

Because Dry Skin = No Bueno

Weather has a huge impact on your skin. There’s less moisture in the air when it’s cold, which leads to dry, flaky skin that even the most outdoorsy guy can’t contend with. Heat isn’t good either, as the sun can pull moisture from unprotected areas of your skin. Using a moisturizer with shea butter is a great way to restore your skin’s moisture balance. Shea butter protects your skin from UV rays, pollution and dehydration. It also stimulates collagen production, which makes fine lines and wrinkles less visible.

Another tip: don’t just moisturize your face. You also expose your ears, neck and chest every time you step outside, so apply moisturizer to those areas, too.

Because There’s No Fountain of Youth

Aging is inevitable, and with it comes certain skin imperfections. While these are all signs of every late night and youthful adventure you’ve experienced, there are things you can do to minimize the signs of aging. Men should use a textured moisturizer that lifts and firms, since their skin is usually more thick and coarse than women’s.
Want healthy, younger-looking skin? Then stay away from moisturizers with dyes, sodium lauryl sulfate and parabens (preservatives often found in cosmetic products) that can dry and irritate your skin. Instead opt for moisturizers with aloe, which hydrate and tone the skin and fight early signs of aging.

Because Bar Soap Just Won’t Cut It

If you’re cleansing your face with the same stuff you use to wash your back, then you probably need a good moisturizer. Harsh soaps — and even the detergent you use to wash your clothes — can strip moisture from your skin. To combat this, use a moisturizer with ingredients that enhance cell renewal and antioxidant protection, like willow bark extract, grape seed and acai oils.

You don’t need a complicated skin care routine to have good-looking skin, but you do need to invest a little effort to get there, and that starts with choosing the right moisturizer. Trust us, your face will thank you for it.

Which TENZING product can you not do without?

I love the Pre-Shave Oil, which is interesting because I never used a pre-shave oil until we created the company and formulated our own. The 100% natural oils are super nourishing to your skin and provide an extra-close shave, and it doesn't leave any oily residue on your face. I love it!

What is one of the things you would put on your “bucket” list?

I would love to travel for a year with my wife and three girls and have our children experience the world. This would be a great way for them to grow intellectually and experience new cultures.

Who is your favorite superhero and why?

I've never really been into comics and superheroes. I could make up an answer, but I'd rather pay tribute to all the true heroes that serve our country and local community. I am forever grateful to them.

If you could go any where in the world, where would you go and why?

I would like to travel to one of the more remote places in the world—either Tristan de Cunha in the south Atlantic Ocean or Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific. I would like to experience life without all the distractions and commodities we have on a day to day basis, such as life without TV, iPhones, or Starbucks.  I think it would be a great experience! But in reality, I'm sure I would only last a week or so.

What is your favorite hobby?

Eating good food and traveling. I'm an admitted foodie. I also love experiencing new places with my wife.

Stay tuned for more in our founders blog series, coming soon. And, don't forget to Start Your Day Great !
